Philosophy
Children who have difficulty in the academic subjects need to be helped to understand that they are intelligent beings who are valued. They need to know what they are good at: strengths must be built up… along with their self-concept and individuality. Weaknesses are explained and addressed. Every child is precious to God – life is more than marks and what they achieve.
Learning support at St John’s Prep
- Children are referred for lessons from the Pre-Prep learning support teacher.
- Children who are underachieving are referred by their class teachers.
- Parents who are concerned are involved in the process.
– We have a full-time learning support teacher in Prep
– Timetabling of lessons is carefully planned so that pupils do not miss work. Pupils are also consulted about suitable times (throughout the school day and after school).
– Lessons may be one-on-one or in small groups (three or four).
– Frequency of lessons varies depending on needs.
– The learning support teacher works closely with all teachers involved with a child and maintains contact with parents.
– Advice is given and children may be referred for external assessing.
– There is no additional charge for lessons.
– Individual education plans are drawn up for each pupil.
– From Grade 8, pupils are referred to the College learning support teacher, Mrs Sue De Witte.
– Lesson content varies depending on the needs of the pupils.
