Vocational guidance
The main aim of the Career Guidance department is to supply pupils with information concerning study, work and travel opportunities.

In their LV year, pupils are given the opportunity to participate in a Vocational Guidance Programme with Mrs Lion-Cachet (HOD Career Guidance) and Mrs Gillian Green (external Psychologist). The pupils attend a three-hour workshop and write psychometric tests. The feedback takes place in the form of a one-hour interview with both parents and pupil.

In addition to this programme, we also assist all LV pupils with self-assessments, utilizing the Holland Personality Programme.

The gap year

As many have come to realize there is enormous value to be gained from a break between secondary and tertiary education. A gap year can offer new challenges, the opportunity to mature, travel, see and experience life with other cultures – a wonderful experience.

There are many different ways in which a gap year can be organized. Tutors Worldwide visit St John’s College annually in February/March to interview our interested pupils and parents. The school leaver is offered the opportunity to work in an overseas school environment as a tutor at either Prep or Secondary schools. In a secure, stable and supportive environment the tutor is given board, lodging and some pocket money in return for performing a range of tasks and duties, as laid down by school.

Work experience

Students find in their final year at school the most confusing and exciting periods of their lives. The College is committed to empower and develop students in the form of a Work Experience. All UV pupils are required to contact businesses, draw up their CV’s and pay a three-day visit to the organizations of their choice. To date the feedback from both the organization and pupils regarding the experience have been very positive.

University evenings

During the month of May various tertiary institutions visit St John’s, affording pupils and parents the opportunity to ask specific questions regarding various degrees and other related matters.
